Vaude Charlie Toddler Sleeping Bag

Vaude Charlie Toddler Sleeping Bag £60.00 is reviewed by Esther Bell, mum to Hugo 6 months and Marguerite is 3.

“If you’re after a really eye-catching, envy inducing toddler (no taller than 80cms) sleeping bag for camping  then this really is the ‘Rolls Royce’ of bags. I have the Chute Green, which is like a very bright lime green, it’s beautifully colourful, has the softest, snuggliest microfleece lining, it packs away neatly and its fitted hood and tapered feet keeps my little girl very snug and warm.

However, what I found disappointing is that it is not genuinely as versatile as the wording led me to believe. Vaude say it can also be attached onto a pram/buggy as a footmuff/coccoon – but you have to cut the bag yourself to make the slits for the harness straps to feed through and with these new home-made holes in the fabric, I’m not sure its going to be quite as temperature tight as it would be without cuts. Vaude have reinforced the ‘would be’ harness points, so it will work well as a footmuff.

It is, however tremendously warm, so great for camping in the UK, but it means I’ll only use the sleeping bag outdoors, I think my little girl would overheat if she slept in it in the house.

Finally, I’m not convinced about its versatility to be opened flat for a baby blanket/play area. Unzipped, my little six month old is comfortable sitting on it and he loves feeling the soft lining with his hands and feet, but because the sleeping bag is cut to be fitted at both the head the feet, it is actually incapable of fully flattening. Fully unzipped, the sides still flap over so I don’t think it’s safe to used as a play mat for babies on tummy time or lying and playing on their backs.

Price wise, as far as buggy footmuffs go, the price is actually quite good! On the sleeping bag front I’ve got myself a rather expensive, but very desirable sleeping bag.
